Differential Service and Maintenance

As the exterior-facing wheels have to travel farther to get your car around the corner while making a left turn, the interior-facing wheels naturally turn slower. That’s why the wheels of your car need to be able to revolve independently and at varying speeds. This will prevent slipping and keep your car moving with power around corners.

Independently powered by the engine through the drivetrain, your car’s differential is a mechanical set of simple planetary gears that enable the wheels of your vehicle to spin at independent speeds.

If you're looking for experienced professionals to service, repair, or maintain your car's differential, turn to the team at All Roads Truck & Auto Repair. With over 50 years of combined experience in the industry, our team can get the job done to your complete satisfaction.

Front and Rear Differential

Depending on how the wheels of your vehicle are powered, your car can either have one or two differentials. As a rear-wheel drive vehicle uses engine power to move only the rear wheels, there will only be one differential mounted on the rear axle.

Unlike a rear-wheel drive vehicle, an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle allows the engine to send power to all the wheels. That’s why a four-wheel drive vehicle will have a front as well as a real differential.

A front-wheel drive vehicle will most likely have a transaxle that functions as both the transmission and the differential.

Differential Fluid

There are many interlacing gears and bearings inside your differential. To allow the differential to transfer power smoothly and seamlessly, the interlacing gears rely on each other and needs a lubricant. The front differential, rear differential, and limited slip differential (LSD) need gear oil to not only lubricate the differential drive components, but also keep them cool.

Signs of a Differential Problem

  • Banging or skipping when cornering
  • Whirring noise either while decelerating or at speeds that exceed 15 mph
  • High pitched howling sound during acceleration
  • Rumbling sound that starts when the car is traveling faster than 15 mph
  • Persistent clunking sound
These symptoms indicate that there is a problem with your car's differential. If you experience any of these symptoms, bring your prized possession to our auto repair shop for a complete vehicle inspection. Our experienced team will thoroughly inspect your steering, suspension components, as well as the differential during your complete vehicle inspection.

Regular Differential Service Is Extremely Important

Your vehicle cannot run without a differential. Hence, we highly recommend getting your differential checked and the differential fluid changed regularly. How often differential service is required depends on your vehicle make, model and mileage.

Refer the owner's manual or contact us for more information about your vehicle's recommended differential service interval.

"Excellent service and friendly people. Knowledgeable of all makes and models but especially for diesel! Hard to find good diesel mechanics close by my house! Took care of both work trucks I brought to them and fixed them very quick! They fixed the starter issue on an almost 18-year-old truck and got perfect alignments done. Thank you!"
